What is a chronograph?

Posted on October 10 2021

Mikä on kronografi?

Classic chronographs are particularly popular among watch enthusiasts both for their craftsmanship and practicality. But what does chrono mean?

A chronograph is a watch with timekeeping functions . The term comes from the Latin words "chronos" and "graphein," literally meaning "to write time." A chronograph typically has buttons to start and stop timing. The elapsed time can usually be viewed on additional sub-dials on the dial, displaying seconds, minutes, and sometimes even hours, depending on the watch. After starting, each hand moves according to its time unit. So, the second hand moves faster than the minute or hour hands. After stopping, the hands can be reset, and timing can be started again from zero.

Who is the chronograph suitable for?

The history of chronographs is reportedly over 100 years old. With technological advancements, traditional chronographs have significantly increased in popularity over the decades. Chronographs are excellent for measuring intervals and elapsed time, which can be both fun and useful for many watch users. Therefore, a chronograph might be just right for you - it reliably measures time on your wrist, whether you're boiling eggs, working, or studying. It also serves as an alternative to a sports watch, as it makes it easy to measure performance duration.
